Poll: Double Plug Pedestal Ban...
Should campgrounds be allowed to ban plugging into both the 30 and 50-amp outlets on the same pedestal?
Everyone,
No, I’m not selling or even promoting this product. But I want your honest opinion on if you think campgrounds should be allowed to ban RV owners from plugging into both the 30-amp and 50-amp outlets on the same pedestal. Here’s a 30/50-amp lockout device being sold to campgrounds.
Some of the need for this ban is that campgrounds don’t want to be charging the batteries in EV trucks and cars for free. Plus, while the NEC has recently updated from a 9,600VA to 12,000VA load calculation per 50-amp pedestal, NEC also allows campground designers to apply a demand factor that reduces the total amount of power required for the entire campground. They don’t plan for the 30 and 50-amp outlets to be used simultaneously on the same pedestal, especially with a continuous load like an EV charger.
This demand factor derating is what can cause campground power brownouts during hot days with lots of air conditioners running at a full campground.

Concerned that the device overlap will not allow either plug to be fully inserted and cause high resistance with a partially inserted blade
