Happy Mardi Gras Mike. As a life long New Orleanean (for the most part) the traditional food that end today is king cake. If you have never had one think fastnach on steroids. They are traditionally only available between Jan 6 until Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday). I would include a pic here for those who have never seen one but not sure how to do it,
San Francisco (SF), CA and the surrounding Bay Area has a lot of great food but is particularly famous for its sour dough bread and ItsIts ice cream sandwiches. SF sour dough is said to have originated in the 1840’s during the gold rush and is claimed to get its flavor from a yeast, Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis, that grows well in SF’s foggy climate. ItsIts are a sandwich with chocolate covered oatmeal cookies surrounding a core of vanilla ice cream. The claim is that ItsIts go back to 1928. Both are great treats to try when visiting SF and are often imitated elsewhere but somehow magically better when visiting the SF area.
This makes me hungry! Also reminds me of one of our favorite teenager hangouts (in the 1970s, and since 1837, still there now!), the Franklin Cider Mill. We'd usually go there in October and get fresh warm cider and warm donuts, yummy! https://www.franklincidermill.com/
