Time for a non-electrical article!
I’m all about good eats. In fact, my uncle said that while most people eat to live, I live to eat. And I can’t argue with that description. So today I’m going to describe a special donut made only this time of year. It’s the humble fasnacht!
What’s a Fasnacht?
What I’m eating on Fat Tuesday!
I picked up 2 1/2 dozen of Krumpe’s Fasnachts yesterday in a mix of glazed, cinnamon and powdered sugar types. You can still walk into the back alley garage to watch (snd smell) them being made. Talk about fresh!

We’re very lucky to have Krumpe’s Do-Nuts in an alley less than a mile from my house. Krumpe’s has been in business for over 80 years, and was a hot spot for late night snacks when I was a 16-year old musician in a rock band. Yes, you could walk right into the converted garage in the back ally at 2am and get a box or bag of freshly made donuts. Yum! Read more about Krumpe’s History HERE
What’s some of your own local food traditions?
Please let us know about your own local food specialties and where to get them. It could be fried chicken 🍗 or hot dogs 🌭 or tacos or 🌮 Smith Island cake 🍰. When I travel I always try to sample the local food favorites. And so should you!
Please eat great food out there… Mike
Happy Mardi Gras Mike. As a life long New Orleanean (for the most part) the traditional food that end today is king cake. If you have never had one think fastnach on steroids. They are traditionally only available between Jan 6 until Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday). I would include a pic here for those who have never seen one but not sure how to do it,
San Francisco (SF), CA and the surrounding Bay Area has a lot of great food but is particularly famous for its sour dough bread and ItsIts ice cream sandwiches. SF sour dough is said to have originated in the 1840’s during the gold rush and is claimed to get its flavor from a yeast, Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis, that grows well in SF’s foggy climate. ItsIts are a sandwich with chocolate covered oatmeal cookies surrounding a core of vanilla ice cream. The claim is that ItsIts go back to 1928. Both are great treats to try when visiting SF and are often imitated elsewhere but somehow magically better when visiting the SF area.
