Will a Lithium battery shot with a rifle explode?

One of my RV tech students “shot” this video for me…🧐

Everyone

Last week at the Hershey RV Show I asked what would happen if you shot a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery with a high powered rifle. So he went home and tried it! And yes, he shot a video of it for me…

Is this bad?

IMHO - It’s not as bad as it looks. While a Lithium Ion Battery (the chemistry in many EV cars as well as scooters, hover boards and computers) can burst into flames if improperly charged, a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery in the RV doesn’t have the same rapid runaway meltdown. However, if an RV Lithium battery severely abused by shooting it or driving a metal rod though the cells, there will be a slower energy release that will cause a normal fire from the combustable materials. But there is much more to study about this.

Please leave your comments below.

Let’s play safe out there… Mike
