Updated Reflected Hot-Skin Video
Here's a better video of how a reflected hot-skin voltage can fool a 3-light outlet tester into indicating a reversed hot/neutral polarity...
Everyone,
A few weeks ago I posted an article showing how a 3-light outlet tester will misinterpret a hot-ground voltage as reversed Hot/Neutral Polarity. Normally, a simple Reversed Hot/Neutral Polarity on a pedestal won’t cause a hot-skin voltage. But a hot-skin voltage can cause a 3-light tester to indicate a Reversed Hot/Neutral Polarity. So, cause and effect reversal can really mess with diagnostics!

A better video
I shot the first video on my iPhone, which was okay but a little small onscreen. Here’s a better video of this effect, which I’ve just added to my Powerpoint presentation for the Tampa RV show later this week. But you get to see it here first.
I’ll be teaching a different 1-hour RVelectricity seminar each day at the Tampa Show beginning 10am on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the big seminar room.
This demonstration will also be part of the 3-light outlet tester review I’ll publish in a few weeks, once I’m back from the road.
See you in Tampa this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday!
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
Mike, I make a habit of plugging in my ems to the pedistal before connecting the line to my RV and then energizing it from the CB. My thinking is if there is an issue the ems will through an error code. Is this a good practice or am I risking the ems and should I be using a multi meter instead?
