Powering a 30-amp RV from a 240-volt generator
This works, but you’ll only get half of the generator wattage…
Here’s a question from the Rockwood Mini-Lite - Flagstaff Fan Club Facebook Group.
Can I run my 25FKBS RV trailer with this generator? It’s a 30-amp, 120-volt RV I want to plug into a 6500-watt, 240-volt generator… - Rick
Dear Rick,
That’s going to be a very loud generator you won’t want to run in any campground or park. But it will work with a NEMA L14-30P twist-lock to TT-30R RV adapter.
You just need a properly wired male 4-prong twist-lock plug to female TT-30 RV adapter. But be aware that you’ll only get half the available wattage out of the generator since you can only use one pole of power for 120 volts, not two poles for 240 volts.
This dogbone adapter should convert the 2-pole, 240-volt generator output to single-pole, 120 volts on the RV plug. But just in case it was wired wrong from the manufacturer (hey, do do does happen) be sure to test the RV outlet first to confirm it’s actually 120 volts before plugging in your RV.
You can find this type of dogbone adapter on Amazon HERE.
Let’s play safe out there…. Mike
Mike, I too have a generator with a 240 volt four prong outlet. But my adaptor is for a 50 amp RV. As such I envision that both of the 120 volt legs in the generator reach the RV as two 120 volt legs thru my 50 amp adaptor. Thus allowing me to use the full amperage output of the generator. The danger here is you don't want 240 volts reaching the RV whose appliances are all set to run on 120 volts yes? I will test to confirm as you suggest but please tell my if my understanding is correct.
