Mike, I too have a generator with a 240 volt four prong outlet. But my adaptor is for a 50 amp RV. As such I envision that both of the 120 volt legs in the generator reach the RV as two 120 volt legs thru my 50 amp adaptor. Thus allowing me to use the full amperage output of the generator. The danger here is you don't want 240 volts reaching the RV whose appliances are all set to run on 120 volts yes? I will test to confirm as you suggest but please tell my if my understanding is correct.

Yes, you are correct. Each pole of the generator should measure 120-volts to neutral and 240-volts pole-to-pole. That’s exactly how the 50-amp pedestal outlet is supposed to be wired.
