My RV Electrical Safety Book Turns 10-Years Old This Month!
Should I write another book for RV technicians? Please take this poll...
Everyone,
This month my RV Electrical Safety Book turns 10-years old. And it’s been way more successful than I ever imagined. I’ve found it on the help desks of RV accessory manufacturers, being quoted by National Electrical Code engineers, and used by dozens (maybe hundreds) of RV technicians. Below is an excerpt from an email I just received (and which I’ll answer in an upcoming SubStack article).
Hello Mike,
I just received (6) copies of your RV Electrical Safety book; They will be distributed to friends and family. I am a commercial/industrial electrician in St. Louis, with 30 plus years of experience, so I too have seen my share of miswiring. I recently helped a friend out that was having some problems with her Shasta camper electrical system. Below is a picture of the existing load center in the camper, before I corrected the problems.
As you can see, the previous owner mistakenly terminated all of the equipment grounding conductors and neutrals on the insulated neutral bar. There was also no load center or chassis grounding provided…
Thank you, Ty McCat
Should I write an advanced edition?
Boy have I learned a lot about RV electricity in the last 10 years. If you’ve been reading this daily newsletter or found my posts on various RV forums then you’ve seen bits and pieces of all this new information. And most of what I’ve published on this daily newsletter has been easy or intermediate level, with an occasional advanced article.
It Ain’t Easy!
But this new advanced edition won’t be for everyone since it will need to be really complicated. I plan to cover topics like:
Designing 3-phase power distribution in campgrounds
Improving power factor in RV components
Load balancing campgrounds to reduce voltage sag and power loss
Static and dynamic EGC ground testing procedures
Campground pedestal maintenance and upgrades
Fuel Cells for RV installations
If all goes well this new book should available in the spring of 2025.

Here’s how to buy my current book…
My RV Electrical Safety book is for you!
Don’t worry that it’s too complicated for beginners. This is an easy read showing you the basics of voltage, current and wattage, along with simple diagrams of how to measure pedestal voltages with a digital meter. I wrote this book for beginners, so don’t worry that it’s too complicated for you.
And even if you’re trained in electrical systems, there’s still much to learn about RV power. So I’ve also included higher level concepts that are useful for troubleshooting electrical problems. Electrical knowledge is indeed power!

Let’s play safe out there… Mike
I have your first book and I also read your articles. Seems like your Advanced book would be more directed to campground owners. Maybe a different title so folks know the difference in audience?
Mike
You may wish to write or post an article concerning why/why not neutrals and the grounding conductor should not be connected in the RV distribution panel.
Might help others to better understand the issue.
