I have learned much today, having talked to Magnum, Xantrex and Progressive Dynamics at length. Watch for a new post tomorrow morning that will get your attention!

I've owned two Magnum converter/inverters. One modified, one sine. I've disconnected batteries in the prescribed negative first manner numerous times with no issues. But, we shall see what the "Experts" say.

We have an MS2000 (purchased about 10 years ago. The manual can be found here:

I just did a 'ctrl-F' for "disconnect" (disconnect positive or battery got no results). The closest I found to "disconnect the positive first" is this:

4.5 Performing a Power Reset

To perform a power reset (also known as a hard reset):

1. Remove all AC power (utility or generator power) to the inverter.

2. Open all the inverter DC disconnects (or disconnect the positive battery cable to the inverter).

3. Ensure the inverter(s) and the remote are disconnected from all AC and DC power (the

remote display will be blank).

4. After the inverter(s) has been disconnected from all power for 30 seconds, reconnect the

inverter DC disconnects (or reconnect the positive battery cable) and resume operation.

I do not recall ever reading or being told to connect or disconnect the DC cables in a particular sequence. If that was the case, Magnum -- being a responsible mfr with great documentation -- would certainly have warnings in the manual, and probably on the inverter itself.

Also, if an inverter were designed such that the *pos*(+) cable had to be disconnected first, that would be guaranteed to cause accidental shorts and potential injuries.

Thanks for looking into this, Mike.

From my MS2812 manual, for context:

CAUTION: If removing all battery power (positive and negative) to the inverter, do not remove the DC negative connections to the inverter or any accessory until after all positive battery connections have been disconnected. This will prevent damage to the inverter or to any network connected accessory.

I have a Magnum MS2000 in my 2017 coach. Living in Alaska I always remove my (6) batteries for winter storage. I have always removed the negative post first with no I’ll affects. Have I just been lucky?
