Hi Mike,Â
I managed to pull out the hollow brass ground pin on my 50-amp plug. I have the Airstream cord for a 2020 Airstream trailer. Looking down the pin hole it appears the pin was pushed in, not molded to the plug. What are my repair options?
Thank you - Donald N
Hey Donald,
That plug is a goner, I’m afraid. Even if you do manage to stick the ground pin back in the hole so that it feels tight, there is not going to be a solid, low-resistance electrical connection.
That low resistance ground connection is what protects you from a short circuit in your RV that can cause a high-current hot-skin voltage condition. It’s a vitally important part of your electrical safety system, so don’t plug into shore power with a missing or damaged ground pin.
Get a replacement plug
You can find a replacement plug on Amazon HERE. They’re fairly easy to install as long as you pay attention to the insulation colors of the wires.
Let me know if you want me to make a video of the installation procedure.
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
Mike;
A video of the 50A plug replacement procedure would be most helpful. While I have done this several times, I would like to know how a professional would approach this task and if there are any tricks to it I have yet to figure out!
Thanks for all your helpful articles. You are providing a great, sometimes life saving, service to your RV followers.
In the photo provided I would like to see a little more copper wire protruding from the connection and some outside insulation showing at the cable clamp area.
