There are dimmers that will work with most LED's. The are pulse width modulated dimmers. They work similar to the triac dimmer, by basically turning the dc voltage on and off at a high frequency.

This actually turns the led on and off very fast resulting in a lower light output depending on the width of the pulse.

Your eyes will not notice the 'flickering'.

Oh yes, that's exactly how DC dimmers work. I'll do an article and video about the technology sometime this summer...

Thanks, Mike. You could have mentioned these, without a complete explanation, instead of just how a AC dimmer works and why it won't work on DC, without letting the OP hanging.

This was originally from a question sent to me over 2 years ago, and at the time I did explain to the OP about PWM dimmers for 12-Volt LEDs. Looks like a good follow-up on this article.

Great explanation. I've heard that dc dimmer switches don't always work on the LED lights in most campers.

How about adding how to properly wire DC dimmers into a circuit!
