Funny that you mentioned Yellowstone NP as an example. A few years ago, while visiting Yellowstone I took my infra red thermometer from the RV to the hot springs just to see how the temperatures varied from spring to spring. A ranger lady saw me taking non-contact readings and had a complete meltdown!! She was going to cite me for “damaging” park property. She had never seen an IR thermometer before. After explaining to her what I was using and how it functioned, I was “let off” with a stern warning not to use it in the park anymore, or a stiff fine would result! So, I suggest not trying to wow the crowd at Yellowstone.
