I have never plugged in anywhere without using my Progressive 30 amp surge protector. Just because I'm home doesn't mean I trust the power there to not experience lows and spikes, so I use the Progressive there too. Two years ago I had an electrician install a 30/50 amp box in the shop for my motorhome but I still use my EMS between the box and my RV. Wouldn't plug in without it.
Our power company out here in Ca. (P.G. and E.) will reimburse customers for damage/losses due to failure of their equipment-with the exception of weather-related ones. You have to send in a form that requires you to name the items affected, their cost, date and time of occurance, and some other details. I did this several years ago after a transformer failure in front of our house.
We had our power company install a whole house surge protector. We live in a rural area and have frequent low voltage (brown downs), electric going on and off, and in Florida many lightning strikes.
I have replaced circuit boards, touch pads and the like on our stove, refrigerator and have other problems because of power problems.
Since have the whole house surge protector installed, I have not had any more power related issues, knock on wood! I still use battery backups on the television, satellite system and desktop computer which have surge protection included.
This is a very interesting topic and it got me thinking. With all the hype of buying an electric car, do they have built in surge protection while charging? If not are they looking at expensive repairs if they have a power surge, or high/low voltage? I always use my EMS on the RV because of all the items that run on electricity. These electric cars are all electronic.
As an electrical contractor i will not install a new entrance circuit breaker panel without installing a whole house surge protector a cheap insurance policy
Several years ago Mike made this same suggestion and since then I use my surge protector religiously no matter what outlet it is plugged into. As he said, you just never know.
