Do you have an RV surge protector (Poll)
Please take this poll to find out what percentage of you have a surge protector...
Dear Readers,
I’m need to know what percentage of you have any kind MOV or EMS/Advanced Surge Protector, and is it plugged into the pedestal or mounted inside of your RV? And if you don’t have a surge protector, I want to know that as well. Please take this poll and include any additional questions in the comments.
What’s a MOV Surge Protector?
A MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) Surge Protector comes in 30 or 50-amp versions and plugs into the pedestal outlet. It provides spike protection from voltage transients and nearby lightning strikes, but no over/under/open-ground protection. And many of them have indicator lights that confirm proper outlet polarity and grounding of the pedestal outlet. It looks something like this and generally coasts around $100 to $150.
What’s a Pedestal EMS Surge Protector?
These EMS (Electrical Management System) Surge Protectors are larger (and more expensive) versions of the MOV Surge Protectors. In addition to MOV devices for voltage spike protection, they also include a relay and voltage monitoring circuitry that will disconnect your RV from shore power if the voltage goes out of pre-set limits or the ground is lost. They generally cost around $300 for 30-amp versions and $400 for EMS/Advanced versions.
What’s an Inside Mounted EMS Surge Protector?
These have the same functions of the EMS Surge Protectors described above, but are mounted inside of your RV instead of hanging on the pedestal. Price is $300 to $400 depending on if it’s for 30 or 50-amp power.
What’s an ATS Surge Protector?
Some ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) units for your generator include the EMS over/under voltage/ground function. One example is the Surge Guard RV Power Protection ATS shown above. These generally cost around $800 since they include both Generator Transfer Switch and EMS Surge Protector functions.

Let’s play safe out there… Mike
You don’t provide a way to choose multiple answers. We use a pedestal EMS plus have an inside mounted EMS.
You may get some biased results here. I suspect your sample base, the folks reading this newsletter, are more attuned to the need for protection and will show higher usage than the RV population at large.
