Can you parallel mismatched generators?
It's not a good idea, according to my discussions with several generator manufactures...
Hello Mike,
I own a Predator 3500 inverter generator and my buddy has a Predator 2000 inverter generator he is wanting to sell. My question is will it benefit me to buy it and parallel it with my 3500 for just a bit more?
I don't even know if it is possible to pair the two together. I've searched for the answer and ran across your information. Before I decide whether to buy it, I would very much like an answer to this. Thank you.
Dear Tom,
Every manufacturer I’ve looked at has stated that only identical model and wattage generators can be paralleled. And I’ve talked to the help desk at Honda and Yamaha, both of whom confirmed my suspicions.
Honda Connections
For a quick review, here’s how this works with Honda generators, including where to add the Neutral/Ground bonding plug…
Predator Connections
And here’s what you use to connect two Predator generators in parallel.
I suspect that connecting 2000 and 3500 Predator generators together would void any warranty and possibly damage one of them. But I can’t be 100% sure since I’ve never tested this myself. However, if Harbor Freight were to send me a pair for testing I would be glad to try them out. And no, I really don’t need any more generators as I have plenty already.
I’m not sure since Honda states you can only parallel their generators within a certain serial number range. But it is an interesting question.
I have a Champion inverter generator and according to their web site, looks like they can support paralleling dissimilar units.
