Exact same thing happened to me. I was changing batteries in a wireless mic. I put the old battery in my pocket (with my keys and change). I was driving home from the gig when I noticed the warm feeling in my pants.
There are some pretty cool battery caddy things out there. They keep the terminals isolated but the batteries can be popped out of them singly. Some are designed to operate with one hand so as to swap noise canceling headset batteries “on the fly” while piloting an aircraft. I use them for all my disposable batteries in the RV.

If you WANT/NEED to start a fire a 9v battery and a little steel wool will have that emergency camp fire burning in seconds.
Been there, done that, works great!
