Updated video on 3-light tester failure!
My video demonstration of a Hot-Ground causing a 3-light tester to falsely indicate Reversed Hot-Neutral Polarity…
Here’s my updated video demonstrating how a 3-light outlet tester indicating a reversed Hot-Neutral polarity can also be caused by an external Hot-Ground in a campground.
I posted an article back in November on why this false polarity reversal indication is an important concept for troubleshooting apparently random RV hot-skin voltages in campgrounds. Read it HERE.
Don’t confuse cause and effect
So an outlet with reversed Hot/Neutral Polarity wiring doesn’t cause an RV hot-skin voltage, an external Hot-Ground Voltage causes a 3-light tester to incorrectly indicate a Reversed Hot-Neutral Polarity.

This explains a lot of the confusion about the causes of Hot-Skin Voltage.
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
Hi Mike,
Will my 50 amp Progressive EMS see this condition?
Great video Mike. Quite discomforting how the outlet tester lights send different inaccurate messages as you varied the ground voltage. Have you tried your demo with the Klein outlet you recommended that has an internal multimeter? I wonder if it can detect a hot ground?
