Things you can power with a Solar Generator
Tony Barthel and I discuss things you can power with a Solar Power Station
Everyone,
When these so called “Solar Generators” first came out a decade ago, I didn’t much like them at all. In fact, I called them a bunch of over-hyped junk. And I was right at the time.
Many of these units had a small AGM battery with a medium size inverter promising all kinds of power. Plus they sometimes included a small solar panel that would take days to recharge the battery. And the wall-wart charger could take 12 to 16 hours for a recharge. They over-promised and under-delivered.
But in the last few years there’s been a serious upgrade in the design of these Solar Generators from companies such as Southwire, BLUETTI and Jackery. They now are powered by Lithium batteries, and many include built-in fast chargers that only take 90 minutes for a complete recharge. Plus you can now get them with up to 1,200 watts of portable solar panels.
While still pricey, this new generation of Solar Power Stations (I still hate to call the Solar Generators) have as much Amp-hr capacity and inverter wattage as an entire RV house battery system.
I’ve used a variety of these Solar Power Stations to power my pellet smoker, pump up tires on my trailer, and even power a portable 12-volt refrigerator for days.
So watch Tony Barthel (From Stressless Camping) and I discuss our own experiences with Solar Generators. Then post your questions in the comment section below and we’ll do our best to answer them.
will the Jackery be compatible with the Go Pro solar charger. I will receive my 2205S micro lite soon from Forest River. Has only a 1000 watt inverter but using go pro for solar charger. I see that Go Pro has it's own solar Generator? Which one to get? I do plan to Upfit to the power grid system with ABC outfitters in August. Should I wait to purchase a generator until then?
I have a Bluetti 200 max it has a 400 watt ac adapter for charging. I have a ProMaster van that has a 180 amp alternator. I want to connect an inverter to the van battery to charge the Bluetti while we drive. My questions are what size inverter would you recommend, what gauge wires, and what size fuse?
