Failing GM truck brake controllers
Please leave a comment if you experienced a brake controller failure in your GM truck.
Everyone,
I just received this response about my 7-way connector article. I remember hearing about the problem with the trailer brake controller failing, but I’ve never encountered it in the wild. If you’ve experienced this dangerous problem, please include details in the comments below and share this post on any GM owner sites you belong to. - Mike
Dear Mike,
I wonder if some people are asking about how to test their 7 prong plug because of a problem with GM trucks from about 2006 to 2020. I don't have the exact dates because my paperwork is in my truck in storage.
These trucks will display Check Trailer Wiring from time to time. And then will display Trailer Connected. The intervals vary so much GM can not find a problem. When this is displayed all the lights work on the trailer but NO brakes.
I have spent almost $1,000 trying to solve this. Everyone thinks it is a trailer problem but it is in the truck. I have talked to over 50 owners of GM trucks and everyone has the problem. I have filed a complaint with the FHTS commission.
GM has a bulletin that says the 7 prong plug on the trailer needs to be changed to a specific brand. That does not work.
Enjoy your info. Trying to learn more.

I had the same trailer brake problem on my 2017 GMC Sierra! Kept blowing the fuse in the under hood fuse compartment too.
I solved the problem by trading in the truck and buying a new 2019 Sierra with a gear upgrade that gave me an 11,200 lb towing capacity.
I'm going through this right now with my 2015 Silverado 2500HD.
