While modern, properly maintained electric space heaters can be safe to use, overheated extension cords and power strips can easily cause a fire.

A space heater is blamed for the deadly fire in a Bronx apartment building Dear Readers, I know I sound like a broken record sometimes. But once again I’m heartbroken to report another electric space heater fire that has resulted in the deaths of a lot of innocent people last year.

I try hard to not use an extension cord for 2 reasons. 1- the overheating of the cord and 2- tripping hazards. If I need to use an extensive cord for long periods of time I will install a receptacle. Installing one in an RV is difficult however it can be done if you get inventive.
Where I used to work, plastic power strips were forbidden by our company fire department (yes, we had a fire department). Only metal encased ones were allowed.
