"Short Circuits" - Can you plug a 120-volt light into a 30-amp outlet?
A “Short” article on electrical “Circuits” 💡⚡️
Hi Mike,
I’m wondering if by using an adapter I could plug a 110 volt set of lights directly into a 30 amp pedestal? Would I need to convert the voltage or not? - Ken D.
Hey Ken,
No need to convert voltage. A 30-Amp RV pedestal outlet is already wired for 120 volts, so just plug in a 30 to 15 amp adapter like the one below and you’re all set.
What about over-current protection?
I also recommend adding a basic power strip with an integrated 15-amp circuit breaker. I don’t like connecting a 30-amp outlet directly to skinny extension cords without some kind of current limiting in case you accidentally short out the wires. You can get one at any big box store or Harbor Freight for less the $10.
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
