Dear Mike,
I purchased a Aquaglide inflatable Kayak for our travels along with a 12V pump.
I have a 2024 GMC 3500 truck, and it does not have a 12V receptacle on 110V so I purchase a 12V converter on Amazon.
DC12V
Output Current 10A Max
Output Wattage: 120W Max
Input: DC12V 110W is the only information I see on the pump. The pump turns on but only runs for about 1 second before it shuts off. I can run the pump fine off of the 12V receptacle in my Prius so I know the pump is good but that will not tow any trailer 😉
As I write this, I see they also have a 20A 250W model. Do you think I need the unit with greater amperage to run this pump?
Thanks for all the great new letters. - Bill Boyd
Bill,Â
I do believe you need the 20-Amp version of the 12-volt power supply.
The 12-volt DC motor in the pump is going to need at least 9-amperes of current while running, and probably twice that for inrush current while starting up. The 10-amp power supply you’ve already purchased just can’ produce enough starting and running amps to allow the pump motor to operate.Â
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
Whoa... A 2024 GMC 3500 with no 12V accessory socket? My 2005 Dodge came with THREE. Seems like there would be a different solution than to rely on AC and convert back to DC.
I have the same inflatable Kayak and a very similar inflator. They both work great and I love them! My kayak weighs only 15 lbs so it’s easy to take it camping. My wife has one too. The inflator can inflate or deflate the kayak in 5 minutes. It’s amazing! I recommend that Bill try this great accessory. It’s a great alternative to an AC to 12V converter! It plugs into your 7 pin trailer connector at the back of your truck and gives you a cigarette lighted receptacle in the perfect location! Just start your engine when you use it so you don’t run down you battery and to insure that you have 12V going through your 7 pin connector. Here is the Amazon link:
