How to reset a tripped circuit breaker…
Don't be confused about tripped circuit breakers. It's not obvious!
Everyone,
Last year I wrote about how to reset a tripped circuit breaker in an RV. But I keep seeing confusion on other facebook groups I belong to.
Can you make some suggestions please. Located in western PA; 32 degrees! full time camping; hooked up to electric; 30 amp; storage tank for water; pic of RV specs and breaker box attached: my issue is - I woke up to a cold trailer around 4am! Brr!! My bedroom has electric, my stove has propane, but no electric in kitchen/dining area nor the bathroom. The 15 amp breaker won’t reset and what does “Gen 12V” mean? And I believe my camper batteries are dead. I need to keep my hot water tank from freezing. Spent for new one earlier this year…
Here’s the lesson
The circuit breaker in question didn’t need to be replaced, it just needed to be reset to OFF before turning it back ON.
Lesson #1
When a circuit breaker trips from an overload, the handle generally (but not always) goes out of line with the other breakers. That’s the first hint of which breaker is tripped in a panel.
Lesson #2
But you can’t just flip it back to the ON position. You first need to move the circuit breaker switch hard all the way to the OFF position, and then move it back to ON. You should hear a click and the switch handle will line up with the other breakers.
If you don’t push it hard to the OFF position the handle will feel kind of floppy and you might assume the breaker is faulty. But that’s exactly how it’s supposed to work. So aways switch a tripped breaker hard OFF first, then back to ON.
