🟢 GMI (Grounding Monitor Interrupter) Confusion!
Don't believe what you've read in press releases or websites. I have the accurate info...
Everyone,
There’s a new electrical safety device being developed for installation on all RVs being manufactured beginning late 2026. It’s called a GMI for Grounding Monitor Interruptor, and it’s a loss of ground device that confirms the chassis of any new camper trailer or motorized RV is properly bonded (grounded) to the campground pedestal’s ground bus. If the GMI in the RV doesn’t find a proper ground from the pedestal, it won’t allow power to reach the RV’s electrical system. That’s to prevent hot-skin voltage shocks.
There’s been a lot of misinformation in press releases and recent articles
Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of misinformation from official news outlets on how and where GMI devices will be installed, which seems to be the result of AI generated content.
Here’s the confusion
Contrary to what you have read, GMI devices will only be required in new RVs as of late 2026, and NOT installed in campground pedestals or retrofitted on existing RVs. Here’s screenshots of two emails I received yesterday after an inaccurate post on ModernCampground.com a few days ago.
These questions have incorrect info on how GMI devices work
Just the facts (from me)…
GMI devices will be required in all new RVs late 2026 (exact date is still TBA)
GMI devices will NOT be installed in any campground pedestals
There are currently no GMI devices designed for campground pedestals
There are no GMI devices available to retrofit to existing RVs
A campground pedestal with improper grounding will cause the GMI in new RVs to interrupt power to the RV which cannot be bypassed
Campground pedestals will need to be tested for correct grounding (bonding)
There will be special training and test gear required to test pedestals for correct grounding so that a GMI equipped RV will receive electric power
Adding a grounding rod to a pedestal or RV will not create a sufficient ground to allow the GMI to turn on power to the RV
That’s all for now. Watch for updates soon.
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
So, how do these GMI devices work? Black Diamond level.
My Hughes Power Watchdog shuts down power if a bad ground is detected. Is this the same feature as a GMI?
