GM Brake Update: Prototype fix!
I might have a hardware solution, but I need your help testing it...
Dear Readers,
A few months ago I published an article about 2024 GMC/Chevy 2500HD and 3500HD trucks shutting down their onboard trailer brake controllers randomly. I think I know why this is happening. Please read more about it HERE.
GM knows about it…
There’s been a bulletin issued by GM on the failure in June, which appears to be related to the RV trailer having a Lithium Battery and Solar Panels which has a higher voltage than the truck computer is expecting. When that occurs the truck’s computer simply shuts off the built-in brake controller. Of course, a large trailer without operating electric brakes will be difficult to stop, especially in an emergency.
I have a prototype fix to try
I now have a prototype plug-in fix that has a high probability of working. But I still haven’t found a 2024 GM truck and trailer near me that’s having the problem. I need to test this in a real-world situation, so I can make adjustments as needed.
I need your help…
If you have a 2024 GM HD 2500 or 3500 truck and an RV with a Lithium battery that disconnects the brakes regularly, and you’re within a day’s drive of Hagerstown, MD, please contact me to discuss doing a test.
Note that I need to be there myself for the test since I’ll be measuring various voltages, so I won’t just ship you a unit to try by yourself. Once I know that it works I’ll be able to confer with GM and subscribers on a hardware fix. Please email mike@noshockzone.org to discuss.
Let’s play (and drive) safe out there… Mike
Mike I am the one that filed a complaint with the NHTSC. I do NOT have lithium batteries or solar panels. After you said this might be the problem I talked to some of my neighbors that have the problem and they do not have lithium of solar. Hate to be a fly in the ointment.
