I have a 2019 Greyhawk 29MVP that has an Onan 4000 generator. It's my understanding that you can continually run the generator for days as long as you make sure that the oil level is maintained. Is that true? What's the longest that you've continuously run an Onan 4000 generator?
Hopefully, this generator can keep up with the need to keep the RV cool in hot and humid weather. -Jaytalk
Dear Jaytalk,
Installed generators, such as your Onan 4000, as well as most portable generators from manufacturers including Yamaha, Honda, Champion and others, are designed to run continuously for days. But there’s a catch…
Maintenance is important!
Note that all generators require regular maintenance to keep them running. In the Onan manual they recommend air filter and oil changes every 150 hours (more often in hot or dusty conditions). So that’s at least once a week for 24/7 operation.
See the Onan maintenance schedule below
What about portable generators?
The same maintenance schedule applies for portable generators, but perhaps a little more often. Here’s what Honda recommends for their EU2200is generator. As you can see, Honda suggests an oil change every 100 hours and air filter cleaning every 50 hours. And this needs to be done more often under dusty conditions.
See the Honda EU2200is maintenance schedule below
Take care of your generator, and it will take care of you!
With proper maintenance any name-brand portable or installed generator should give you years of service. But failure to follow manufacturer maintenance recommendations could result in the loss of warranty coverage and cause an expensive repair. Make sure you stock enough oil and filters for your next camping trip.
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
Until your RV neighbor with a penchant for peace, quiet and the sounds of nature murders you.
Be a good neighbor and limit your generator usage, particularly those loud Onans.
If you need AC 24/7, you are not cut out for this lifestyle.
