Everyone,
I’m gathering intel for my campground metering Town Hall webcast next Thursday at 7:00pm. So I wanted to compare the cost of heating an RV with propane vs. electricity. After all, if you need to pay for your electricity at a campground wouldn’t it be nice to know which was cheaper?
I don’t like portable space heaters
You’ve probably read some of my articles on the dangers of portable electric space heaters. The electrical outlets in RVs aren’t really built to withstand the constant current draw of a 1,500-watt heater.
Plus, without your furnace blower moving warm air through the underbelly of your RV, there’s a real danger of freezing your water pipes.
Enter Cheap Heat by RV Comfort Systems.
This is an add-on heating element to your existing propane furnace which taps directly into the shore power coming into your RV. It converts your propane furnace into a Hybrid Propane/Electric furnace which uses the existing ductwork to move heated air throughout your RV.
Here’s preliminary data
Here’s info from RV Comfort Systems. I’ve not reviewed all their algorithms and data yet, but I’m reasonably sure of its accuracy. Plus I can create and post an Excel spreadsheet here that will compare costs after you plug in your local price of propane per gallon and electricity per kWh.
I’ll confirm these numbers for my Town Hall Webcast next week

Let’s play safe out there… Mike
I installed one of these Cheep heat systems in our Fiver 4 or 5 years ago and totally love it. It does a fantastic job as long as you are plugged into a 50amp service. I installed a couple switches so that it will run on a 30amp service but it will not produce as much heat as the 50amp does. Will give it a 5 star rating!
When campgrounds do start metering AC, they are going to mark it up. I think 11 cents from an RV park is a pipe dream.
