Ref yesterday’s post on plugging an RV into a 50-amp receptacle installed for an EV charger which you can read HERE.
Hey Mike,
Wow, what an eye opener! Thanks Mike! I’m kinda surprised (but glad) this story didn’t start with a readers’ horrifying letter talking about how they plugged their RV (with 50 A service) into a NEMA 14-50 receptacle wired for a Level-2 EV charger or a NEMA 6-50 with an adapter.
I had a NEMA 6-50 installed in my garage for possible future use with a welder or EV. I also installed a NEMA TT-30R for use with my 30 A RV. I did not think about the case where someone with a 50A RV might someday go looking for a place to plug it in and think mistakenly they could use the NEMA 6-50.
Your article made me think that I should label my NEMA 6-50 outlet to make sure that any future user is notified that no neutral is present. I’m wondering what other readers are thinking who are closer to the real life situation as I have neither an EV or a 50A RV?
Back to me…
Do any of you have a NEMA 6-50 welder outlet in your garage?
How about a NEMA 14-50R RV outlet?
And if so, do you use either of them for EV charging? If possible can you check to see if the 14-50 receptacle has the neutral conductor installed?
Please leave details in your comments below.
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
I built our house in 2005 after a year-long RV trip, 35,000 miles all over US, Alaska & Canada. Must have had RVng in mind when I designed the elec system to include a NEMA 14-50R 220v outlet in garage, but have never used it. Since I hired a retired Master electrician to work with me on design, specifications and installation with both of us working on-site during RI & trim, I will make the assumption that the neutral conductor is installed, but cannot guarantee that assumption
I do not do EV charging.
I have installed 8 different 50 amp RV hookups in my workshop, carport, storage shed and driveway. I’ve wired them myself and had electricians do it. All are 220 usually fed by 6/6/8 cable.
I have had Motorhome’s, fifth wheels and my Wrangler hybrid connected to all with no issues.
I’m not seeing where anyone should have problems if they wire them correctly?
