Hey Mike,
Always enjoy watching your U-tubes and listening to your super informative talks. Have attended 3 of your seminars while at Airstream events.
I have attached a 3 pics for you to view. I have 2 different dog bone adapters that can go between a 30-amp RV cord and an 1800w Bluetti power box. One has a splitter that would allow you to plug in two 15amp plugs into the Bluetti at the same time. The other would only allow one 15amp plug to go into the Bluetti.
Do you see any definite advantages or disadvantages or safety uses of using one over the other?
We have a 50-amp trailer but often use a 30-amp cord when the 50-amp is not needed. The 50-amp female SmartPlug has a jumper in it so it can be used with 30-amp cord. We would use the 30-amp cord if plugging in to the BLUETTI.
Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing your thoughts. - Stan W.
Hey Stan,
Is this a 4-prong male to 30-amp RV female adapter on the end of your Y-Cable adapter? Please send me closeup pictures of each plug end.
Everyone,
Here’s the pictures Stan sent me…
The basic question is about creating the most robust connection between the output of the Bluetti “Solar Generator” and the 50-amp shore power cord feeding your RV. And as everyone should already know, none of these dogbone adapters will make more power or turn 120-volts into 240-volts. They’re all just pieces of wires connected in specific ways.
What needs to happen
Electrically you need to send the 15-amp output of the Bluetti to the inlet of your 50-amp trailer. And your trailer has a SmartPlug shore power connector rather than an old-school twist-lock plug. That’s a good thing, but it does require a bit of looking around for a solution.
Ways to do it
Yes, you can plug together your 15-to-30 amp adapter with a 30-to-50 amp adapter into your 50-amp to SmartPlug shore power cable plugging into your RV and it will work. But it’s a lot of extra connections with no real gain.
You can also use a double 15-amp male to 50-amp female adapter and plug both 15-amp connectors into your Bluetti outputs and it will work perfectly. And no, it won’t pull any more power from your BLUETTI by using dual plugs.
Or you could get a single 15-amp male to 50-amp female adapter like the one below and it will also work. But you’ll still need to drag out your 50-amp shore power cord even though you have less than 20-amps of current available from your Bluetti..
Best Solution…
I recently found out that SmartPlug now makes a 15-amp male to 50-amp or 30-amp female SmartPlug adapter cable available in different lengths. They’ve promised to send me 6-ft and 20-ft versions soon for review.
No, it won’t make any more power. But it will give you a simple way to use your Bluetti to power your RV with whatever wattage it can output.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Let’s play safe out there… Mike
I have a 30 amp smart plug on my RV. I was going to buy one of those 20 to 30 smart plug adapters until I saw the price!
The SmartPlug is a great improvement on the connector but I can't justify the cost of replacing my cables and outlets. Need to get the price down to gain greater adoption.
