I did a very large solar/lithium/inverter installation for some full-time RVer customers several years ago. After full-timing for a few years they decided to come off the road and purchased a home in Fort Meyers, FL about 6 months before the big hurricane there. Fortunately, they had no damage to their new home or the RV that was parked next to it in their driveway. However, their entire neighborhood was without power for a couple of weeks. They simply moved back into their 5th wheel and ran an extension cord into the house to power their home refrigerator, living quite comfortably through the next few weeks. They also set up a community USB charging station so their neighbors could charge their cell phones during the outage.

Mike, great article. If I understand correctly the Car Generator is essentially a "solar generator" or battery back designed to hook it up to an alternator or car battery while the engine is running in order to charge it. This raises two questions: 1) can a regular solar generator like a Jackery or Ecoflow be hooked to an auto alternator or car battery while the engine is running to charge them as well? 2) When charging from a vehicle, even only in emergencies as you describe here, Should an OEM alternator be used or should it be replaced (or one added) with an alternator designed for this purpose?
