Another pedestal failure
Campground pedestals are often improperly installed and poorly maintained…
From my Facebook group:
I’m getting a lot of interesting questions on my Facebook group. Here’s a really scary one about a campground pedestal meltdown.
Q: I was called to troubleshoot a pedestal because the RV power wasn’t working properly. Ummm… Yea… Just so many things wrong in one little spot. Where do I begin? —Miguel
A: It’s hard to tell, but it looks like the outlet was fed #6 wires then smaller wires tapped off and went out to feed another circuit?!? Definitely a safety issue. The drywall screw in the outlet terminal reinforces the fact that this was a hack job by someone that just doesn’t give a crap about code. —Tim
A: This is a total disaster that probably needs new wiring run back to the service panel, not just taped up splices. I’m sure there was no inspector signing off on this or they would have had a major conniption fit.
This is why an Advanced/EMS surge protector is needed to protect your RV electrical system. An improperly installed and maintained pedestal can easily do thousands of dollars in damage to your RV.
And it’s just one more reason I want to begin teaching campground owner classes about pedestal maintenance and safety. —Mike Sokol
You should read my book on RV electricity
I’ve used my 40+ years of experience in industrial and concert power system design and troubleshooting to write this book about RV electricity that nearly anyone can understand.
It covers the basics of Voltage, Amperage, Wattage and Grounding, with additional chapters on RV Hot-Skin testing, GFCI operation, portable generator hookups and troubleshooting RV electrical systems. This should be essential reading for all RVers who plug into electrical power (and that’s probably YOU)…

Let’s play safe out there - Mike
I'm at a NY State campground as a volunteer. Across the road a man plugged in with a EMS surge and had reverse neutral. Many Rvs were plugged into there without an EMS. I just wonder what damage they did. I loaned them my 30 amp extension to use the next pedestal rather than moving. No 50 amp available in this campground. And not allowed to fix it as a volunteer.
Check out this pedestal failure.
